Edinburgh: 3-Day Itinerary
A Perfect Blend of History, Culture, and Charm
Edinburgh has always been a city shrouded in mystique—a place where history and legend intertwine, where cobblestone streets echo with tales of old, and where every close and alleyway seems to whisper secrets from centuries past. It’s a city that has long been on my travel bucket list, a dream destination that seemed almost too enchanting to be real.
Before I met my husband, Jason, I had plans to embark on a solo adventure to Scotland, eager to explore its storied landscapes and immerse myself in its rich culture. But like so many plans in recent years, those dreams were put on hold by the global pandemic. Fast forward to 2022, when the stars finally aligned, and I found myself not only traveling to Scotland but doing so with Jason, who hails from Dundee, Scotland. Edinburgh, a city he frequented in his youth, was the highlight of our trip. I was beyond ecstatic to finally experience the gothic charm that I had longed to see!
Our visit to Edinburgh was everything I had imagined and more. The city’s timeless beauty, its hauntingly beautiful architecture, and the palpable sense of history around every corner left me completely captivated. Over three days, we immersed ourselves in the heart and soul of Edinburgh, exploring its iconic landmarks, hidden gems, and culinary delights. Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of the arts, or simply someone looking for a magical escape, Edinburgh has something to offer.
Here’s a three-day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit to this enchanting city, filled with all the must-see spots and some off-the-beaten-path treasures that will leave you spellbound.
Day 1: Embrace Edinburgh’s Historical Heart
Morning: Edinburgh Castle & The Royal Mile
Start your journey at the iconic Edinburgh Castle, perched atop Castle Rock. As you explore its ancient walls, take a moment to appreciate the panoramic views of the city below. The castle’s history is rich, with every stone telling a story of Scotland’s past. From the Crown Jewels to the Stone of Destiny, there’s no shortage of fascinating artifacts to discover. I recommend buying tickets online beforehand!
After soaking in the history, stroll down the Royal Mile, a historic street that connects the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. This cobblestone street is lined with charming shops, cafes, and street performers, making it the perfect place to take in the city’s vibrant energy.
Afternoon: Harry Potter Tour
Delve into the world of wizardry with a Harry Potter-themed tour by The Potter Trail, an absolute must for any fan of J.K. Rowling’s magical universe. Edinburgh is a city that played a significant role in the creation of the Harry Potter series, and this tour will take you to the very spots that inspired the books. Wander through the winding streets that influenced Diagon Alley, visit the café where Rowling penned the first chapters of Harry Potter, and explore the graveyard that holds the names of some of the characters we’ve all come to know and love. The tour is not only a treat for Potterheads but also provides a fascinating look into Edinburgh’s literary history and the city’s role in bringing one of the world’s most beloved stories to life. It’s the perfect way to blend the magic of Harry Potter with the real-life enchantment of Edinburgh.
Evening: Dinner & Mary King’s Close Tour
After freshening up, treat yourself to a hearty dinner at a traditional Scottish pub. Enjoy classic dishes like haggis, neeps, and tatties, paired with a local whisky. We dined at McGonagall’s Gin & Whiskey Emporium and the Bramble cocktail is a personal favourite!
Prepare to step back in time with a tour of Mary King's Close, one of Edinburgh’s most infamous hidden streets. Buried beneath the Royal Mile, this labyrinth of underground alleyways offers a chilling glimpse into the city’s dark and mysterious past. Guided by a costumed character, you’ll hear eerie tales of plague victims, ghostly apparitions, and the lives of those who once walked these narrow, dimly lit passageways.
The tour is an immersive experience, allowing you to explore the preserved 17th-century streets while learning about the myths and legends that have surrounded Mary King’s Close for centuries. As you navigate the shadowy corridors, you’ll feel the weight of history in the air—a perfect way to end your first day in Edinburgh, where the past meets the present in a hauntingly unforgettable way. This tour will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the city's layered history and a thrill that lingers long after you’ve left the underground behind.
Day 2: Dive Into Edinburgh’s Cultural Scene
Morning: National Museum of Scotland & Grassmarket
Start your day at the National Museum of Scotland, where you can explore a diverse range of exhibits that cover everything from natural history to Scottish culture. TIP: The museum’s rooftop terrace offers stunning views of the city, making it a great spot for a morning coffee.
Next, head to the Grassmarket area, a lively square surrounded by quirky shops, cafes, and historic buildings. It’s a great place to wander, shop for unique souvenirs, and enjoy a leisurely lunch.
Afternoon: Princes Street Gardens & New Town
After lunch, take a relaxing stroll through the Princes Street Gardens, a beautiful park that sits in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. The gardens are the perfect place to unwind, with plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy the view.
From there, explore the elegant streets of New Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stunning Georgian architecture. Browse the high-end shops along Princes Street and George Street, or simply admire the well-preserved buildings.
Evening: Dinner & Live Music
For dinner, head to one of Edinburgh’s many fine-dining restaurants that offer contemporary Scottish cuisine. We checked out Angels With Bagpipes and it did not disappoint!
Afterward, immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant music scene by catching a live performance at a local pub or music venue. Whether you’re into traditional Scottish folk music or modern indie bands, there’s something for everyone.
Day 3: Explore Edinburgh’s Hidden Gems
Morning: Dean Village & Stockbridge
On your final day, explore some of Edinburgh’s lesser-known but equally charming neighborhoods. Start with a visit to Dean Village, a picturesque area along the Water of Leith that feels like a step back in time. The quaint cottages and serene atmosphere make it a perfect spot for a peaceful morning walk.
Next, head to Stockbridge, a trendy neighborhood known for its independent shops, cafes, and weekend market. Grab a coffee and explore the market, where you’ll find everything from local produce to handmade crafts.
Afternoon: Royal Botanic Garden & Leith
After Stockbridge, make your way to the Royal Botanic Garden, a beautiful oasis of greenery just a short walk from the city center. Spend some time exploring the gardens, and don’t miss the stunning Victorian glasshouses.
In the afternoon, head to the Leith district, Edinburgh’s vibrant waterfront area. Once the city’s main port, Leith is now a trendy neighborhood with a mix of old and new. Enjoy lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants, and take a leisurely stroll along the Water of Leith Walkway.
Evening: Sunset at Calton Hill
For your final evening, make your way to Calton Hill to watch the sunset. The hill offers one of the best views of Edinburgh, with iconic landmarks like the Dugald Stewart Monument and the National Monument providing a stunning backdrop. As the sun sets over the city, take a moment to reflect on your trip and the memories you’ve made.
As your three-day journey through Edinburgh comes to an end, you'll find yourself filled with memories of gothic architecture, historic streets, and the enchanting stories that have shaped this timeless city. Whether it’s the breathtaking views from Arthur’s Seat, the rich history uncovered at Edinburgh Castle, or the ghostly tales of Mary King’s Close, each moment has added a unique thread to your travel story. Edinburgh is a place where history, mystery, and modern life blend seamlessly, leaving you with a sense of wonder long after you’ve returned home.
