Exploring Golden Larches at Ptarmigan Cirque: Our Kananaskis Hike Experience
There’s something magical about autumn in the Canadian Rockies. The crisp air, the vibrant colors, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature’s finest beauty. This past weekend, my family and I decided to embrace the season with a hike to Ptarmigan Cirque in Kananaskis, known for its golden larches that glow in the sunlight each fall.
Early Start from Calgary
We set out from Calgary at 7:30 AM, with the excitement of a fall adventure ahead of us. The drive westward on the Trans-Canada Highway was peaceful, and by 9:30 AM, we arrived at the Highwood Meadows Day Use area in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. But here’s a tip for fellow adventurers: arrive early. The parking lot fills up quickly, and we ended up parking about 0.5 kilometers away, adding a mini hike just to reach the trailhead!
Hitting the Trail: A Steep Start
Ptarmigan Cirque is a 4-kilometre loop, and while it’s classified as an easy hike, the first 800 meters will definitely get your heart pumping. The trail starts with a steady climb up through the forest on a series of switchbacks. If you’re new to hiking in the area, this might feel like a challenge, but trust me, it’s worth every step. As soon as you rise above the treeline, you’re greeted with panoramic views that make you forget all about that initial climb.
Golden Larches Everywhere
Once we reached the alpine meadow, the real magic began. The golden larches were in full glow, illuminating the entire landscape with their golden and green hues. The sunlight danced on the larches, casting a warm glow that made the entire valley feel like a golden paradise. The beauty of this moment made every step of the hike worth it, and I couldn’t help but stop every few minutes to take in the breathtaking views (and snap a few photos, of course!).
Completing the Loop
After soaking in the sights, we continued along the trail in a clockwise direction. The loop eventually levels out, making it an enjoyable and easy stroll back down. The entire hike took us about 1.5 hours, but we spent extra time admiring the scenery and exploring along the way.
What to Know Before You Go
If you’re planning a hike to Ptarmigan Cirque, here are a few essentials to keep in mind:
Location: Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Kananaskis Country, Alberta

Elevation Gain: 221 meters
Family-Friendly: Yes, but it’s not stroller-friendly.

Be sure to pack appropriately for the conditions. We brought along layers, plenty of water, and snacks to fuel our adventure. The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so it’s always best to be prepared with a waterproof jacket and sun protection.
Final Thoughts
